About Joe Cool – From Craig Schultz

Charles Schulz, known to friends as “Sparky”, continued to expand Snoopy’s role by creating over 100 alter-ego personalities including the World War I Flying Ace, Literary Ace, a tennis pro, a golf pro, Foreign Legionnaire and of course, Joe Cool.

“In the 70s my siblings and my friends used the name ‘Joe’ to describe someone who was an expert at something,” says Craig Schulz. “Dad picked up on that and started using it in his comic strip. Snoopy was the perfect character to use for this since he had so many interests and alter-egos.”

Joe Cool made an unofficial debut in the PEANUTS comic strip on June 13, 1970, when Snoopy was drawn with sunglasses for the first time. He was officially named “Joe Cool” nearly a year later on May 27, 1971. Since then he appeared regularly in the strip especially throughout the 1970s. Joe Cool also flaunted his “expertise” at many other activities, dubbing himself “Joe Surfer”, “Joe Skateboarder” and “Joe Hunk”. At one point he even participated in one of the more notorious pastimes of the 70s: Streaking (which involved ditching his sunglasses and collar)!
